Le Bistro de L'Olivier: Tastes from the French Countryside
By Ken Lin Translated by Cheryl Robbins

Bistro Olivier Casino Namur De

A friend from France who has lived in Taiwan for a number of years describes Le Bistro de L'Olivier as a cure for his homesickness because it serves food that tastes just like it does back home.

However, French authenticity does not only apply to the food at this restaurant, but also the atmosphere. Le Bistro L'Olivier looks like a classic French bistro with a mix of soft lamplight and candlelight illuminating old posters and photographs. In addition, the southern French dining experience is heightened by the fact that the tables are usually filled with French people speaking in their native language.

Owner and chef Maggie is a beautiful, sophisticated Chinese woman who has written seven books on food and fine dining. Maggie has spent time in southern France and, upon her return to Taiwan, wanted to open a restaurant focused on the cuisine of that region. She insists on keeping the flavors authentic and is not willing to modify any of the dishes to satisfy Taiwanese palates. This commitment makes Le Bistro de L'Olivier is the place to go in Taipei if you're looking for a real French dining experience.

Before dinner, try a French aperitif, such as Richard or Kir. Among the more than 20 appetizer choices, recommendations include the homemade goose liver pate and Marseilles fish soup. Popular main course selections are the rack of lamb with parsley and rosemary cream sauce, duck and steak tartar.
This restaurant's desserts are also too tempting to refuse and include chocolate tarts, caramel pudding and French-style apple pie. The wines have been specially selected by Maggie and mostly come from the Bordeaux region of France. Along with the delicious food and romantic candlelight, this restaurant offers a dining experience not soon forgotten.

Prices range from NT$690 to NT$1,000 for set dinners, including a NT$790 vegetarian option, and the menu changes daily. In addition, Maggie is willing to design menus for dinner parties or for couples who are looking for a custom-tailored romantic evening. There is even a parking lot adjacent to the restaurant.

With so much going for it, Le Bistro de L'Olivier is an absolute must for Taipei epicures looking for a very authentic French bistro.
